A healthy individual’s normal mouth opening ranges between 40-50 mm (around the width of four fingers). However, certain conditions can lead to restricted mouth opening, medically called trismus.
One of the most common causes of limited mouth opening in India is Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) — a chronic, progressive, and precancerous oral condition caused mainly by chewing areca nut, gutkha, or betel nut.
At Magadh Oro Dental Clinic, Patna, we specialize in advanced diagnosis and laser-assisted treatment of OSMF, helping patients restore their mouth opening and prevent further complications.
What is Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF)?
OSMF is a chronic disease characterized by fibrosis (hardening) of the oral mucosa due to excessive collagen deposition. It affects various parts of the oral cavity, including:
Buccal mucosa (inner cheeks)
Palate (roof of the mouth)
Pharynx (back of the throat)
If left untreated, OSMF can lead to severe restriction in mouth opening, difficulty swallowing, and an increased risk of oral cancer.
Causes of OSMF
The primary cause is the habit of chewing areca nut (supari), gutkha, and betel nut. Other contributing factors include:
Tobacco chewing and smokeless tobacco products
Nutritional deficiencies — particularly Vitamin B complex, Vitamin A, and iron
Excessive consumption of spicy foods
Genetic predisposition
Alcohol consumption
💡 Fact: OSMF is most common in India, especially in states like Bihar, UP, and Andhra Pradesh, due to widespread gutkha and betel nut chewing habits.
Symptoms of Oral Submucous Fibrosis

Burning sensation while eating spicy foods
Dryness of mouth
Blanching (whitening) of the oral mucosa
Tiny ulcers and irritation
Advanced Symptoms:
Restricted mouth opening (trismus)

If you experience any of these symptoms, book a consultation at Magadh Oro Dental Clinic, Patna for early diagnosis and management.
