Difference Between Gingivectomy & Gingivoplasty
Both surgeries involve the removal of gum tissue. The main difference between the two procedures is that a gingivectomy removes diseased gum tissue surrounding a gum pocket while a gingivoplasty is performed to reshape gum tissue usually for cosmetic reasons. A gingivoplasty can be used in combination with a gingivectomy and there are also cases where a gingivectomy can be used for cosmetic procedures. Our Periodontist Dr. Abhishek Verma will advise on what is best for your needs. The steps involved are as follows:
Your teeth will be cleaned to thoroughly remove plaque and calculus from the area using periodontal scaling and root planing. A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area. If you are having a gingivoplasty, we will shape and remove gum tissue contributing to a disease or create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance to your gums. This only takes a few minutes. If you are having a gingivectomy, we will determine the depth of the pockets using a probe to provide guidance where incisions will be required. Pockets are measured in millimetres. We will remove only the gum tissue required to eliminate the pocket cutting at a 45-degree angle to the tooth to ensure we take only the tissue that is diseased. This cut is “apical.” Once we have completed the procedure, we will place a surgical dressing on the gum tissue. We will send you home with proper instructions to care for your mouth following your procedure.

Pocket Reduction Surgery by Periodontist Dr. Abhishek Verma at Magadh Oro Dental Clinic
Periodontal disease can cause pockets to form between the tooth and gum. These pockets can gather plaque and need treatment. If nonsurgical treatments can’t reduce pocket depth, surgery may be needed. Surgery on gum and bone can reduce pocket depth and save a tooth or teeth. It allows our periodontist to remove tartar deep below the gumline. In some cases, pocket reduction surgery is combined with regenerative procedures. These are methods we use at best dental care services Patna that stimulate new bone growth.
Reshaping gum and bone
Pocket reduction begins with flap surgery. The gum is separated from the tooth and later reattached in a new position. In most cases, osseous surgery is also done. This involves reshaping and smoothing the bone. After treatment is complete, the gumline will most likely be lower. This leaves more of the tooth exposed. If the root is exposed, ongoing treatment with fluoride or another material may be needed to reduce sensitivity.
• Before surgery. A deep pocket allows plaque and tartar to collect far below the gumline. Inflammation and infection have destroyed some supporting bone. • Opening the gum. The gum is first lifted and rolled back, creating a gum flap. Tartar and bacteria are then removed from the root. The surgeon also removes diseased gum tissue.
• Shaping the bone. If needed, the bone is smoothed and reshaped. This reduces irregular areas where bacteria grow. • Helping tissues heal. A substance may be applied to the root to help the ligaments and gum reattach. Tools may be used to seal off the area and reduce bleeding. • Closing up. The gum flap is sewn shut in a position that reduces pocket depth. A dressing may be used to protect the area. This dressing is a bit like clay or putty. If used, it remains in place until removed by your periodontist at a follow-up visit. • After the gum heals. Once the gum is healed, the stitches dissolve or are removed. Our periodontist Dr. Abhishek Verma also removes the dressing. The pocket is shallower. With a lower gumline, it is likely that more of the tooth will be visible. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are needed to maintain the health of the gum tissue.
Periodontal Flap Surgery at Magadh Oro Dental by Periodontist Dr. Abhishek Verma
When advanced gum disease (periodontitis) develops, your teeth are in danger: At this stage, the ligaments and bone tissue that surround them are being destroyed, and you could even begin losing teeth! If the disease can't be controlled by non-surgical treatments like cleaning and scaling, then periodontal flap surgery may be your best treatment option.
Flap surgery is today's leading method for treating and repairing periodontal pockets. What are these “pockets?” They are areas below the gum line where gum tissue has detached from the teeth, resulting in an uncleansable space where harmful bacteria can proliferate. These bacteria cause inflammation of the tissues, resulting in sensitivity, bleeding, and pain. Left untreated, they can cause a host of problems including gum disease, loss of the tooth-supporting bone structure, and possibly even systemic (whole-body) problems.
When periodontal pockets develop, the first step in treating them is usually via cleaning and scaling (also referred to as root debridement) with a manual or ultrasonic instrument. If this isn't effective, then periodontal surgery is considered. Flap surgery isn't a cure for periodontal disease, but it helps create an environment that makes it easier to maintain your periodontal health. And even if you're prone to gum disease, proper professional treatment and regular care at home can help keep your teeth healthy for as long as possible.
The Goals of Flap Surgery One major objective of flap surgery is to eliminate or reduce the pocket itself. To access it, a flap-like incision is made in the gum tissue. This allows us to remove diseased tissue from inside the pocket, and lets us access the teeth's root surfaces for a thorough cleaning, helping to eliminate harmful plaque and calculus (tartar). Afterward, the “flap” is closed, sealing the area. This begins the healing process, which takes place rapidly.
Another goal is the regeneration of periodontal ligament and bone tissue which may have been lost to the disease. We use a variety of techniques to accomplish this, including high-tech methods of bone grafting and chemicals referred to as growth factors. These approaches help restore the gums to their normal form and function, and promote the healthy and secure anchoring of teeth.

Step by step Flap Surgery Procedure at Magadh Oro Dental Clinic
Flap surgery is typically done under local anesthesia, sometimes accompanied by oral anti-anxiety medications; alternatively, it may be performed under intravenous conscious sedation at Magadh Oro Dental Clinic. After anesthesia has taken effect, a small incision is made to separate the gums from the teeth. The outer gum tissue is gently folded back to give access to the roots and the supporting ligament and bone tissue.
Next, the inflamed gum tissue can be removed, and the tooth roots can be cleaned; if needed, the area may also be treated with antibiotics or other medications. Bone defects can be repaired with grafting material, and proper regeneration of the periodontal ligament can be encouraged by physical (barrier membranes) and chemical (growth factors) methods. Finally, the incision is closed and the procedure is completed.
Performed by an experienced hand, state-of-the-art flap surgery has an excellent track record and offers well-established benefits. It's often the treatment of choice for relieving periodontal disease and helping to maintain your oral health and preserve your teeth. Care after scaling and root planing
After your deep cleaning appointment, the bacteria in the pockets will have been removed, and you will have been instructed on how to perform the correct oral hygiene to support your oral health. Additional symptoms that may be experienced after Scaling and Root Planing Appointment
Discomfort can vary after root planing, but a patient can expect some degree of soreness afterward since the deep cleaning procedure is usually performed at a deeper region (under the gums). The teeth themselves can become a bit more sensitive to temperature, and occasionally there might be some bleeding for a short while afterward.Over-the-counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen, work very well to alleviate discomfort. But stronger painkillers can be given should you require them.Brushing and flossing can be delayed or done more gently for a few days following the deep cleaning procedure to avoid aggravating any bruised or tender gum areas. We may recommend salt water or chlorhexidine rinses as a short-term alternative – or in addition to – your regular at home cleanings.
