Difference Between Gingivectomy & Gingivoplasty

Both surgeries involve the removal of gum tissue. The main difference between the two procedures is that a gingivectomy removes diseased gum tissue surrounding a gum pocket while a gingivoplasty is performed to reshape gum tissue usually for cosmetic reasons. A gingivoplasty can be used in combination with a gingivectomy and there are also cases where a gingivectomy can be used for cosmetic procedures. The steps involved are as follows:

Periodontal disease can cause pockets to form between the tooth and gum. These pockets can gather plaque and need treatment. If nonsurgical treatments can’t reduce pocket depth, surgery may be needed. Surgery on gum and bone can reduce pocket depth and save a tooth or teeth. Reshaping gum and bone

Pocket reduction begins with flap surgery. The gum is separated from the tooth and later reattached in a new position. In most cases, osseous surgery is also done.
