Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, also known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement.
TMDs can be caused by:
(1) Excessive strain on the jaw joints
(2) Bruxism, which is the habitual, involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth
(3) Trauma to the jaw, head, or neck
Signs and symptoms of TMD include:
Jaw discomfort or soreness
Headaches
Pain spreading behind the eyes, in the face, shoulder, neck, and/or back
Earaches or ringing in the ears
Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
Aching facial pain
Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
Clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew
Some things you can try to help with TMJ disorders include:
Cutting foods into small pieces so you chew less
Avoiding hard, crunchy foods, chewy foods, and thick or large bites
Avoiding extreme jaw movements
Keeping yawning and chewing to a minimum
Not yelling, singing, or doing anything that forces you to open wide
Not resting your chin on your hand
Not holding the phone between your shoulder and ear
Practicing good posture to reduce neck and facial pain
Keeping your teeth slightly apart
