Zygomatic implants are dental implants that are anchored into the zygomatic bone, or cheekbone, instead of the maxilla. They can be used when the upper jaw bone has been lost, or when the maxilla is severely resorbed, and the quality or quantity of the bone is not sufficient for conventional dental implants. Zygomatic implants can also be used in complex reconstructions after trauma or pathology, or as an alternative to sinus augmentation
Zygomatic implants can be placed during an extraction or in an edentulous arch. They can be loaded immediately, or "buried" for 4 to 6 months to allow for osseointegration before the final prosthesis is fabricated. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia at Magadh Oro Dental.
Zygomatic implants have been used for dental rehabilitation in patients with insufficient bone in the posterior upper jaw, due to ageing, tumour resection, trauma, or atrophy. Zygoma implants take the anchorage from the zygoma (cheek bone). The Zygomatic bone is denser in quality and more cortical in nature than posterior maxillary bone.
The Zygoma implant is available in lengths ranging from 30 to 52.5 mm. The head of the zygoma implant is engineered to allow prosthesis attachment at a 45-degree angle to the long axis of the implant. Zygomatic implants can be used in patients who do not have any teeth in the upper jaw, patients who have heavily broken down teeth or very mobile teeth due to diseases such as generalised aggressive periodontitis.
Case 1 - Zygomatic Implant placement for fixed prosthesis after right maxillectomy
This patient had got Right Maxillectomy done due to black fungal infection. He was unable to eat because the seperating wall between oral cavity and nesal cavity was removed. one and only option for fixed prosthesis of this patient is zygomatic implants supported prosthesis.
